Info via Eventbrite:

Rogue Space Chelsea will open a very special exhibition featuring shoe artist Noriyuki Misawa on November 7, on view until November 12, at 508 West 26th Street, 9F New York City, with an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, November 9.

Misawa’s work was exhibited in Cannes during 2017 Cannes Film Festival, attracting many film directors, actors, and actresses. His clients include Spike Lee, Adrien Brody, Angourie Rice, Agnès Jaoui, Park Chan-wook, T.J. Miller, and Claire Denis.

Misawa, an award-winning and well-respected shoemaker from Japan, creates the most exquisite and innovative shoes that embrace a concept of art and beauty. To him, shoes are more than just wearable tools. For this exhibition, Misawa will explore the aesthetic of Japanese beauty by incorporating traditional Japanese materials such as gold leaf into the leather shoemaking process. Leather shoes, in fact, originated in Europe and have a long tradition there. This blending of Japanese craftsmanship and the traditional European shoemaking process creates a compelling exhibition in which Misawa’s work offers a glimpse of fusion between East and West.

Misawa has a strong background as a traditional shoemaker in Tokyo and Vienna, but at the same time, he has been exploring shoes as a form of artwork since his early career. As a result, Misawa has received prestigious international awards, including the International Efficiency Contest of the Shoemakers in Germany and Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan.
