Andy Warhol’s 1984 series of Rorschach paintings are the result of a misunderstanding. Warhol thought that patients created rorschach tests for doctors to decipher, so he decided to create his own. The canvases themselves are so much more grandiose than one might imagine. Standing 13ft high, the paintings illicit an immediate sense of respect as you become enveloped in trying to figure out what it all means.
As it was featured on the cover of Jay-Z’s Decoded, the gold-print rorschach is obviously my favorite. While I’m used to seeing the black & white versions, the gilded gold truly stands out; it seems it shouldn’t be used for psychiatric purposes! The opulence is certainly warranted by Jay-Z as he claimed himself to be a “Warhol already”. I also found out the the black versions are made with a method that includes urinating on the canvas…. wouldn’t want that in my house. lol
Do you have a favorite Warhol?
